Hello, I'm very VERY new to the live-action role-playing experience, and I have a few questions, so bear with me.

1.) For my character, I'm very much interested in being a Scholar. While the Professions page does a good job at describing what a Scholar is, I have a hard time figuring out what a Scholar actually does IG. What are some of the various things I can expect to be doing as a Scholar in the game?

2.) I understand that Scholars are a no-combat profession, but I still have to be able to defend myself. What are some of the ways I can do so?

3.) What are some tips for spending my beginner 10 build? What are some skills that would be most useful to my character?

Hmm...that's all I have for now, but I may have more questions later.
Thanks for reading. ^.^

I don't really think this is a rules question, so... I'm goin' for it.

As someone who doesn't use weapons...

2.) Run away. Hide under a table. Make friends to who will keep an eye on you.

Really, duel-classing is a pretty significant part of this game, so while you might start off as a wimpy Scholar, there's nothing preventing you from -also- becoming a SUPER PWN MIGHTY WARRIOR. And then getting Sorcery.

Also, you could learn to use a shield, through the use of the 'commoner' list.

There's also a huge variety of magical defenses that you can either skim the rule book for, or just ask a friendly mage person in game.

-laughs- I'll keep that in mind. Actually, now that I've had more time to plan and really think my character through, I feel a lot better about playing. Still nervous, but it is in my nature to be nervous anyhow.

Thanks for answering. :)

I was nervous too when I started playing, because I'd never really done any RPing before. The trick is to just let go and have fun. Sit and talk with as many characters as possible!

Hope that helps to alleviate some nerves  :D

Thanks, support like that is what makes me want to go. My one friend was like, "I'll kill you in your sleep." xD Not exactly the best motivator. :P

Hello, and Welcome!

I'm fairly new myself, but the answer I can give you is similiar to Elyse. Making friends with more powerful characters is pretty easy, but surviving KR at low-level is not extremely hard to do. One of the best things you can do early on is just get out of dangerous situation. I learned that fast and hard my second game when I took an incenerate from a dark fairy. And if you do die, die loudly so that the healers can find you.

Also, my IG Uncle plays a scholar and alot of his time is spent writing scrolls and collecting/learning information, if you get the skills for it. The scholar class is actually pretty strong on its own since it can learn almost everyone's spells through scrolls and can cast any of the rank 1 spells (determined by your academic traditions), though this can be limited by race and other class decisions. I'll send him your way when i talk to him next.
