The problem with that Joe is that a Cthulu is already coming out starring Tori Spelling. And it sucks. Hardcore. There's no hint of the Cthulu monster, and the movie seems more about the Cthulu cult from Lovecrafts books than anything else. Besides, Abrams said that the monster is entirely original.

This rumor is likely false, i've been following the movie as best I can and Abrams basically says its a new monster of his own creation. I definately wouldn't mind being wrong, but almost all signs point to it not being Cthulhu, Godzilla or anyone else we've seen before.

Alex, why on earth would they show the monster in the commercials/previews if that is the basis of all their advertising? Abrams and crew have been banking on the fact that people will go see the movie on the sheer sake that nobody has any legitimate idea what this thing looks like. But you are right, once the movie premiers, it is either going to be a huge hit, or it is going to let a lot of people down. Some sources point to some sort of creature that carries parasites into the city, hence the infection and insect sound coming from the subways. then again, a lot of people say it is also going to look like a wierd deformed, mutated whale creature. I suppose the only way to be certain is to wait until Thursday night.

If anything, the movie is better if they show little of the monster as possible. Terror is much easier to cause when you can't see something and are forced to visualize it yourself.

But you must finally see the monster after a while. The most terrifying sci-fi movie ever was Alien. The monster stalked its prey and was revealed a little more each time. Its sequel, Aliens showed the terror from another side by overwhelming the viewer with a horde of Aliens coming fast from everywhere. Awesome.

Perhaps one good clear view of your caps lock or shift key would be more beneficial.
I fall into the "slow tease" camp of terror myself. One of my favorite scary movies (which technically isn't a horror movie but still scares the pants off me in parts) is Jacob's Ladder. Part of what makes the film so horrific is that you don't see everything--you just get bits and pieces and insinuations until you're just as confused and frightened as the main character. I'm not suprised that JJ Abrams is behind this project either, as the entire first season of Lost was basically "there's a big scary something out there that we are totally not going to show you".

Its a movie about a guy that posts on a forum for a LARP, but he never actually comes to the LARP. Hmmm, why does that plot sound so familiar?

I used caps lock on those three words on purpose to emphasize them. and that is exactly why I hate "Lost". however the movie you refrenced is a good movie.. however.. again.. since cloverfield is from the position of a hand held camera.. its all shaky and such.. if you never get to see the monster... blair witch in nyc with a biger budget... = EPIC fail.

This from a guy who thinks a movie about a girl with fangs between her legs is the bee's knees?
From everything I've seen of the "shaky camera angle" the quality of footage is higher than the BWP. The shots are clearly in the hand-held "style" but not to the point of being painful to watch. Likely you are only going to have trouble during extreme action sequences (as so many of the previews rely on) and in the herky jerky cut-jobs they do of the film for the trailers.
I suspect that this movie, with all of it's hype, will seriously perform in the box offices, and will not displease, even if the "final reveal" isn't a full disclosure.
The exciting part is the journey, not the destination.

Actually "Teeth" isn't supposed to be that bad a movie. It's a horror movie trying to be metaphorical in it's story telling. I'm afraid that the gist of the entire tale and the fun it makes of old abstinence tales will be lost due to the gore and cinemetography of the movie.
As for Cloverfield, a lot has been otssed aroudn this flick. Some thought it was JJ Abrams version of Voltron. Then others thought it was a remake of some Korean horror film called "The Host".
I'm not sure if I want to see the monster... it would depend on how the story played out and whether me knowing what the thing looked like mattered in the end.
