So, one of us has a glorified buckler- straps to the forearm. And leaves the left hand free to use. assuming the small shield skill is taken, what would the rules on this be?
Does a shield require a solid handle, to be held in a hand stationary to work or will a buckler work out the same?
Assuming florentine with the left hand is a no-go, but what about wielding a 2-handed weapon?
Thank you!

Since this isn't in the rules forum, I can get away with answering this!
You can't use a hand for weaponry AND for shieldbearing. You can leave the shield on the arm and use a two hander, but if you block with the shield it's mechanically the same as taking the hit. So long as the arm is solely defensive, I can't imagine it'd be too much of an issue to not have a grip on it, but I'll defer for that much.

This is a question best posed in the Rules boards (where only appropriate Marshals can answer your question. In this case, it would be either Rules Marshal or a New Player Marshal, since you're still a new player):

Although I can say this: if you are carrying a weapon and/or a shield and aren't wielding it, it's a target. So if you have your shield slung over your back and someone hits it with a weapon, it's the same as if they were to hit you.

Despite not being posted in the Rules boards, that does not mean that it is not supposed to be answered by a Rules Marshal or New player Marshal (since it's on the New Player Boards). This avoids confusion on skills and future rules calls.
Jeff is correct, If you have a buckler style shield in your left hand and intend on using it, you cannot have anything on the open hand. This includes packets, weapons, lanterns, etc. Any attack that strikes it while something is in that hand is considered a hit and you will take damage as normal.

Interesting! Okay thanks all for the information!
So, if using a weapon with both hands, with the buckler strapped to one arm... if one were to release the buckler'd arm-hand from the hilt of the weapon, they could feasibly block with it, then re-grab and resume 2h combat?

Feasably yes, but then your 2 handed weapon became a viable target to be hit. Though it kind of borders on breaking the spirit of the rule, so I would advise against it.
