The dragging winds ceased in almost an instant once soul of Gamaliel was severed from the monstrosity. The amorphous form shuddered and cracked, until the whole of its body ripped apart in a massive burst of power. Many souls drifted off into the ethereal realm of spirits, too weak to ever return, but some small wispy remnants of the creature faded off into the distant dark skies. These twisted forms would be a threat some day, but nothing ever akin to the monstrosity that was the Maw. In time, heroes of light and dark will hunt them down and put an end to the last pieces of the beast, but this day the battle was won and oblivion was held at bay once more by the heroes who guard our realm.
The Ascended Realm, the eternal battlefield of Light and Dark, was no more. What barren wasteland remained crumbled to dust when the Maw had entered the Material Plane and so the forces who would once be destined to fight there, were left with a sense of uncertainty for their future.
The heroes returned to their home, wrought with grief. A dark paladin screamed with hatred and venom with nowhere to direct his pain except outwards. An archon became his target, but she knew better. She brought a hope to him he had never known before. And after, there was only silence. A whole town mourned the loss of one of their greatest heroes, and yet they still had more to do. The work would not be finished this night.
In the morning, as the sun rose across the tragic battlefield, a small glint flickered with the rays of the sunlight near where the gaping maw had consumed everything in front of it. It was a sword of elven-craft. The sword was pierced into the ground, with the light dancing across the quillens. It's simple, but still strangely ornate design made it a curiosity to be left alone in this place.
A peasant had been walking by, not knowing the unfortunate battle that had happened just the night before, and noticed the weapon. He knew such a fine weapon would earn him a fair amount of money sold to the right buyer, so he aimed to claim it and be on his way. But when he placed his hand on the grip to pull the sword out, he hesitated. A feeling of serenity washed over him and he slowly let go of the blade. He knew now what had happened here, and got on his knees and prayed. To who may never be known, as well as to what end. But he prayed and paid his respects, and before he stood up to be on his way, he spoke aloud, “I’m sorry for the pain you suffered here. And if I, one day, could be as brave as you, then I will share your legacy.”
And with that, he got up from his knees and walked away from that sword a changed man.

War Report 12181219 - Summation of Bastion’s Wake
The first barricade was breached with little effort. A few enemies were waiting in ambush, but the heroes were able to stop them from setting off the bombs we had brought. Once the first barricade was passed, we entered the courtyard of the Northeastern Gate and immediately set to preparing the next explosive. Another team had taken their bomb to the gate in order to breach the actual citadel. Enzarond had already taken the field here to meet Travance. Heroes fought him off while both charges were being set. Enemy troops poured in from the western wall, but the heroes held off the assault long enough for the bombs to go off. Enzarond fell, seemingly crumbled to ash, but we didn’t have time to investigate. With the breach into the Gate, our troops were able to move in and route the enemy through the citadel while the heroes moved on past the second barricade into the Duke’s war camp.
We entered the camp to find that Duke Balliol was prepared for this assault. He was stationed ready to engage with his Elite Guard. He was given the chance to surrender then and there, but refused and so we had no choice but to continue with the mission. The enemy was engaged on all fronts. Teams were sent out to secure the whole of the camp and route any troops from the outside. Meanwhile, another team was sent to raid the Duke’s command tent. That’s where they discovered why he had been collecting so much blasting powder. He had a bomb set up in the tent ready to go off. It was big enough that it would have taken out the whole field had the raiding team not stalled it.
While his guard were engaged, Balliol positioned himself underneath a watchtower and defended his position while attempting to manipulate heroes to join his side. His devious words and psionic powers made it difficult for those who listened to turn away. It was quick thinking and ingenuity by others that brought the tower crashing down upon him, creating a perfect moment for the heroes to strike. Once he was subdued, a precise piercing needle to his brain left him completely comatose. Enzarond and Val’Ixtal Vai were nowhere to be found on the field. Travance didn’t have time to search, but they didn’t need time to search. A group of heroes had guessed the trap and quickly gated back to the town ahead of the rest.
It was too late. Everyone arrived through the gate to find Enzarond and Val’Ixtal Vai standing on the steps of the Dragon’s Claw Inn, poised to proclaim themselves masters of this domain. With a wave of his hand, Enzarond paralyzed everyone in sight. By the dark powers of the warlock, Duke Balliol regained his senses and was released from the imprisonment. He stepped forward, ready to serve his dark master once again, but even he was playing his own game. He turned on Enzarond and freed the heroes. Enraged, Enzarond controlled the Duke’s mind to fight for him once more. The three enemies split across the field to fight. Each were fought by the Travanace heroes in kind, and with coordinated effort, all brought down.
Val’Ixtal Vai was drained of his power and trapped within a sacred vial. Enzarond was brutally beaten to death and, with much haste, a Soul Harvestor was summoned to shred his eternal spirit into nothing. Finally, Duke Balliol was subdued once again, but this time, accepted his defeat and surrendered himself and his troops.
In a months time, he will be brought before the Count, standing testimony for his crimes against the Kingdom. We will uncover how he came into his unique powers and unravel the mysteries of his plans. Justice will be met.
Scouts have reported that our campaign in Bastion routed or defeated about 60% of the enemy forces. We are waiting on one final report regarding how many of the remaining have surrendered or remain loyal to their fallen Emperor.
Heroes, take ease and rest today, for tomorrow, we reunite this kingdom once more.
