We are going to be trying something new for a few months, and if we see positive results from it, it may become a permanent change.
If you volunteer to NPC an extra shift, beyond your mandatory shift, you will receive a +1 build bonus in addition to standard bonuses awarded. You only need to show up to another shift and tell the MM on duty that you are volunteering for an additional shift for the +1 build. At the end of the shift, have the MM write the +1 build bonus on your card. This bonus can be earned once an event.

To clarify, you have to attend the entirety of this second bonus shift to gain the build, correct? As in you must show up at the start of the volunteer shift and stay the full 4 hours until the shift NPCs are released?
Further, what if your volunteer shift is BEFORE your mandatory shift, and then you skip the shift you originally signed up for?

Great questions!
Yes you must fill the entire shift for the +1 build at the designated shift's times.
AND
No matter what, you are responsible for fulfilling the mandatory NPC shift that you signed up for.

I typically help out monster marshals who need extra npcs for specific mods in addition to my regular shift. Could I do the extra shift at their mod time or would it be better to drop in for that and volunteer for a completely different extra shift?

If someone taps you to NPC a specific role for a specific mod, they need to reward you separately. Those types of pre-arrangements don't count as an NPC shift.
If you are on a shift and the MM on duty assigns you to a mod that probably occupies you for less then an hour, then that is a different story, as you are just filling your NPC duty and doing what the MM tells you.
