MaryBeth's Yenta. I had a great aunt who spoke sorta like that. At least you were not pinching my cheek and telling me I had to eat more.
Clytie walks into the Statehouse with someone. It is quite late at night. We chat. He is very new, only been to one other feast.
Me "Where are you heading?"
Him "The Inn"
Me "Do you have an escort or strong protections?"
Him "Its just down the road. What could happen?"

It's much more fun to leave people tormented then it is for us to kill them. Well at least from a Venier stand point. Was my idea as the priest in the group
I'm glad I decided to hide when these guys came after us then when they all passed I helped the pendarvins finish them off and carry garlan and lorelai to safety. (I'm a new druid, not meant for fighting veneir alone haha)

Was it right? Was it wrong? Time will tell.
The interactions with the paladins afterward was heartbreaking. The very idea that Swyft hurts them just by being near them... (Brother Aldric too) ... is a lot to process. So many feels! Equally, though, I think it made for quite the epic scene.
With this taint of Evil, now! Oof. Wonder how THAT's gonna' play out... Maybe Swyft should just break out with "Let it Go."
Major shout-out to Steve/Aleister, who was an incredible inspiration to Swyft Friday night when she was swimming in a sea of doubt and confusion. Even after the failure, he was nothing but supportive, willing to stay with Swyft as long as she needed. He laid down no judgment, no scolding. Only kindness. Aleister knows better than most, I suppose, the pain of mistakes. Angelica too, was a wonderful help. I do regret that I didn't get to see more of either of you later in the day. I'm not sure where the time went...
Nalick and Chenjing, you were amazing on Saturday night. Swyft won't soon forget it. Birgitta getting emotional right along with Swyft on Sunday was also very telling. <3
That being said, there were so many people who were kind to Swyft, and I apologize to anyone who tried to ask what was going on but got no explanation. It was tough to role play. I cry at every sad movie ever these days, so you can only imagine how hard it was having to explain again and again and again. Eventually I ran out of steam, lol. So, it wasn't that I meant to slight anyone or make them feel less deserving of knowing. It was only that Renee needed a break from the feels!
Other happier things, though...
Meeting the infamous Orias Wormwood. Geez, what a cranky fellow.
The Fashionistas! You ladies were amazing. I shall treasure the little "Fashion Goddess of Travance" ribbon you made for Swyft forever! P.S. Omg, seeing Jed's beard broach and Evrat dolled up in rainbow things settled some of the sting of the day, hahaha! Swyft needed that.
Good times with Wulfgar, Peonia, Raven and Evrat on Friday night. Shouting conversations to Ludvig through the woods... HIlarity.
Watching Wulfgar and the Skinwalker interact. Hell of a diplomatic encounter. Just sorry I couldn't save Blacktree.
Iiiiiiinteeeeense conversations Friday night at Jed's shack with Aleister and Jed. A lot of unwanted attention at times, lol... But damn. Such deep discussions.
Fun times with Indigo and Trexler, though Swyft was mopey cat.
Edmund's super-duper field shield repair and protection. MAN, that's useful!
Good talks with Trent and Imrahil.
Tough love from Jade...
Throwing that shade with Shade.
Oof, being chaotically altered into attacking townsfolk so soon after all that happened with the paladins... and then immediately after that freakout, dealing with after effects of the plaguing Lord of Tears... It was really quite unfair, all of that happening at once.
I enjoyed the whole "Insult" scenario when NPCing for main mod as the thiefy thieves. Glad it amused people.
Playing the "drunk" ghost and trying to get folks to toast to my memory. Shade was super dedicated, he was the ONLY one that could figure it out.
And Argyle, why do you hate fun so much?
Fighting the slavers Sunday morning! To be fair, I did try to avoid violence for as long as possible. If only I'd had four damn gold in my pouch, it would have been less bloody. But, so it goes.
Learning Shield Bash from Donald.
Being coerced into teaching Evrat how to use a shield... and then finally having to talk about what happened after having managed to avoid both him and Jed most of the weekend. Much growling there was that moment.
Again, thank-you to everyone for being the awesome people you always are! I leave this quote as testament to how Swyft felt about the weekend:
“Deserves it! I daresay he does. Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends.”
? J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring
P.S. I'm okay, I hope I didn't scare anyone with all the crying. I promise I won't be a sad sack next game. (It's too hard to be sad for that long!) And I'm not gonna' show up in all black or anything, either.
P.P.S
I'M SORRY, MAGNUS! Your disappointed dad face was the WORST.

Lessons! My courage lesson which led to an unexpected trip to Jed's shack. I'd never been there before and I unknowingly walked right into that one.
Diane's feast = delicious.
Having the privilege of protecting our healers of all varieties during main mod. After being concerned at first by both the number and newness of many of them, they did a great job. I hope my quick pep talk to a few of you about having faith in your abilities helped.
Saving a wild mage child who was about to be killed during main mod, getting him healed, and delivered to Papa Gypsy. Thanks to the NPC playing the boy for rolling with it.
The only lowlight was not getting to see Wormwood, because Faila has a few choice words for him.

Friday
You know life's looking up when you walk into the Blackbird and not even five minutes later get offered a job.
Also Orias Wormwood gave me a drink, I had no idea who he was and was kind of skeptical about it given how he looked but I figured it was a kind gesture and accepted it.
Tried to show a new player around Travance at around Midnight, getting stopped by the guard and told it's a very very bad idea.
Seeing almost all of my old friends from last event, and making more.
Saturday
Got a good breakfast until Vineer showed up and kicked me out of the bar with spears.
Went around killing more Vineer with Argyle and about ten other people.
Learned more about the gods of Arawen from brother Aldric down by Winterdark since I missed the bar mass.
During Main Mod I ended up holding the left flank of the inn with some witch hunters. And then I got turned into a statue.
Finally trying to get to the barracks to attend a mass, but instead getting all of my limbs broken by Vineer trying to bust in the door, and having to be dragged in by my collar. Then being dragged back to the inn to get healed.
Sunday
Going down to fight demons with the adventures guild in the cold. Got some decent loot out of it even though I couldn't feel my hands by the end.

Teaching 5 arcane lessons from different spheres to relative newcomers.
Giving Valance lessons and the 10 minute lesson on four lores taking over an hour.
Edwin making an emphatic statement on a situation to Magnus, Wolfgar, Brogan, and Argyle and the resulting silence as I continued walking after delivering it.
MaryBeth's soup - twice. In the future when you post about interest in it, just pencil me in as a yes.

After Lay-On, I accompanied the rest of the many new players back to the barn to receive item cards. There, I realized that no one had actually charged me for the event, so out of honor, I hastily went to Logistics right after getting the weapon card for my staff and small weapon. When I returned... Everyone was gone. Whoops! So I ended up missing New Player mod. But I had a great alternative. After wandering on my own for several minutes, I finally ran into Kyras and two other Adventurers, who guided me down to the Caravans. There, we expected to find the New Players. But, soon after we got there, we realized our folly. Almost right on cue, screams of Veneir and New Players rang out from nearby Ostcliff. That was one of the most terrifying experiences of my life, but also one of the most exciting! Great role-play, Joe. Our stealthy run was awesome!
A lot of my PC experience was worked out before the event so I had a surefire way to get to know players better. I was soon reunited with my brother, Guo Chenjing, (my good friend, Derek, OOG) but just as we met, a Veneir war party of at least twenty warriors landed just outside of the Inn, and my brother, whom I had just learned had become a guardsman of Travance, was forced away from me and into the fray. That mod was absolutely amazing. I had heard before of NPCing, but I had no idea that the costumes were so extensive. And the lights. And the ritual! It was so much more than I expected, and I loved it. Although I did feel absolutely useless, as a 50-build scholar. More on that later!
Since I honestly disliked the way I built my character, I spent the majority of my time NPCing, taking on three extra shifts! I started sometime between 11:00P.M. and 1:00A.M. (I forget at this point) and went on to 6:00A.M. I had a blast. My first mod was as a Veneir warrior. We raided the Mages guild a few times. There were many players there for no conceivable reason! I enjoyed my "rooftop" battle with Peaches.
P:"Climb! I'm on the roof now!"
M:"Okay, Climb!"
P:"Are yo- You can do that? Are you sure you want to do that?"
M:"Of course!"
Even though I was absolutely terrible at combat at this point, and frequently flubbed, I really enjoyed the experience, and am glad I didn't simply go to bed.
My next mod was as an Orc Warrior, attacking PCs, screaming out "Domag will have Her revenge!" and "For Ravik!" as I smashed into my enemy with dual-wielded maces.
I enjoyed myself so much, that I continued on into graveyard shift, Friday night... err... Saturday morning?
At some point, (I think in 1st Graveyard) I played a Wraith, summoned by a necromancer played by Derek. Dissipate Undead instantly became my least favorite spell (Rest in pieces!) as three PCs, including Peaches, all had it, and repeatedly dispatched me and my Undead comrades. I did, however, manage to blind Peaches and several other PCs and move on to Drain much of the life of other players before yet another character, whom I hadn't previously faced, personally, came up and Dissipated me once more. I wish I had once more go! But when I returned, Derek was no longer able to resurrect me, and instead committed suicide, in a plot twist thoroughly unexpected by the squad of PCs surrounding him. Sir Siepher dissected the body and was awarded neat loot.
The next afternoon, I woke up and took more NPC work, starting at 1:00 P.M. I was one of the Demons looking for True Sinners. It was some great roleplay, sizing up PCs and assessing their malicious worth. It was a great set-up for the Adventurers' Guild mod, which culminated in us actually assaulting the Guild barracks. Unfortunately, Zepeto and several other experienced players were inside at the time. Hilarity ensued, nonetheless!
Next, we were sent out as starving wild animals. I, specifically, was a Bear. I roamed the trails, searching for food, and threatened any PCs who came too close by. I had hoped for more combat, but I happened upon no less than four sympathetic Druids, whom all dispatched me without violence. Only one party engaged me directly, and quickly knocked me unconscious. Corvus (OOG Austin P, another good friend of mine,) suggested dissecting me and implanting a fire bomb, which he had been itching to use for quite a long time. (Austin, you son of a Lich!) But, they eventually resuscitated me, unwittingly passing on the goodies contained within my bowels, and let me go. Lame! But to be honest, it was good roleplay. I think I broke Nalick's legs (OOG Jeff Balla), because he, IC, was far too friendly, and without Animal Empathy or a similar skill, I was quickly thrown into a defensive rampage when he approached me. Sorry Jeff!
When I returned, I was not very worn out, at all, due to the lack of combat, so I went out with two other NPCs and Chris Zepeto for the Rogues' Guild mod. We were sent into the tunnels, attempting to foil the Guild's operations and prepare for the surprise foreign Rogue attack at main mod. After cueing the Guild members to attack, Chris quickly returned, and we proceeded with our plans... Well... If we had plans! Chris' character was an absolute dolt. We all ridiculed him for not knowing what tunnels we were supposed to interfere with, and accused him of inflating his expertise. This went on for a good while. So long, in fact, that we began to question OOG whether the PCs even cared. After fifteen minutes of digging and bickering and whining and complaining, each of us earned Roleplay Points. I was stoked! I didn't expect to earn any on my first event, let alone NPCing. Thanks Chris!
The battle that ensued once the Guild finally decided to show up was amazing. Thank you, Papa Gypsy, for forcing us to dance while we fought. Excellent use of Blood Hex. And dear God, I never want to cross paths with the Guild again. That was an absolute blood fest. And Sylus Crone wasn't even present! I shiver at that notion!
After returning, we were all sick of combat, understandably, and so, on the fly, we came up with this idea of a travelling theatre troupe, coming to Travance to perform "Travance: A Live Acting Experience," a demi-autoteatro of sorts with stock characters and a choose-your-own-story format. I played the role of the Veteran Knight. We chose heroes from volunteers to battle our stock "Dragon" to save a stock Damsel In Distress. Thank you, audience, for being so cruel and brutal! Our heroes repeatedly died, more dragons quickly appeared, and one enthusiastic audience member even ACTUALLY incinerated our actor! We had to constantly reassure the audience that our weapons were props and that our dragon was not actually real. When our hero finally saved the Damsel, we awarded them with a fraction of the Dragon's hoard... If you consider 100% a fraction... In retrospect, I wish our Dragon was a bit more greedy, so we had more loot to pass around, but I digress!
Soon, a PC wearing all black, with red hair and a red beard, came up to me and called "Suggestion: You think he is actually a Dragon--You have to fight him for five minutes." With that, my character flew into a valorous crusade, pursuing my fellow actor for several minutes. Though they plead that they were not a dragon, even removing their mask, I struck them down. When PCs revived the villain, I once again smote it. Finally, someone dispelled the suggestion, and I, in some sort of stupor, questioned "Where did the dragon go?" Some of the more compassionate bystanders explained what had just happened, to which I replied "I... I-I need a drink..." And with that, took my leave. What a feast primer!
(Back to IC for a moment) I did not see Chenjing again until the Baron's banquet the following evening. I wisely hid myself until I knew for certain that we could speak uninhibited. He returned to me briefly after the battle. I broke the news to him that our father, Guo Kun, was gravely ill, and scolded him for ignoring our letters over the past several moons (since two months before Arrrrgust, specifically.) But, once I had heard of the death of my eldest brother, Guo Fong, at the hands of Captain Fross, I understood the delay in correspondence. I still asked that he return with me to the Empire of Jade, to help me take care of Father, or to pay his respects. When he refused, I accused him of dishonor. In my rage and grief, I retired for many hours (I took more extra NPC shifts.) I did not see Chenjing again until the Baron's feast the following evening. I again pleaded with Chenjing to return with me. Finally, however, he explained that he intends to revise the clan Guo again, as our ancestors before us did with their frequent migrations. He also told me that he planned to go to the North and apologize in person to Domag. We have lost a brother. We lost a mother. She lost a son. I acknowledged his honor, and assured him that I would return to Khitan to offer hospice to our dying Father in his stead. I reaffirmed that my commitment is to my family, as our ancestors before us. Thus, I assured him that I would return to Travance to assist him if ever he needed me, but explained that my lover of three years, Zhuge Liniang, was with child, and that I must tend to her, Guo Kun, and my soon-to-be-infant child, before I return. We parted ways, appreciating mutual honor, and promising to see one another again before the end. Our final words were of Mother, Guan Yiping. Chenjing has grown suspicious of the circumstances of her death. I promised to assist in investigating while at home. As the hour grew late, my brother warned me to leave town before the Veneir made their final assault. I heeded his advice, and slipped out of Travance just as the tenth bell struck. I will return to the Tuvan Steppes in the Empire of Jade. I will bury my father, deliver my progeny, nurse my betrothed, and raise my begotten. And I will support my brother in continuing the lines of Guo and Guan--in both Khitan and Kormyre.
OOG: I used the above rich roleplay as an excuse to finally table Guo Liang for now. While I enjoy the character concept, I don't think he is good for a first PC. He will return to Travance, however.
After feast, I took my actual NPC shift. I have never been so exhausted in my life. Seeing the steadfast ranks of Travance was disheartening (OOG), but I had a thrill through every moment. I, a shield-bearer, started out guarding Joe (PC: Kyras), a priest, with my good friend Gabe, another shield-bearer. We tried in vain to protect the priest from damage while he called out his verbals, but the PCs were always ready to fizzle his prayers, and take us down in the process. My favorite battles were with the stragglers, however. I was turned into stone, also, at one point, and was forced to remain perfectly still on the edge of a hill, facing the complete wrong way. I was devastated to hear of Svava's death, as it was soon after my petrification. Before then, I had been very near to her and her small band.
But, OOG, I am very pleased with the outcome of Main Mod. Travance fought with valor, and deserved the spoils.
After Main Mod, we went out as Veneir stragglers, unsatisfied with the tolerable pain incurred by the townspeople. We found very few opportunities to torture PCs, but relished each. Several were left blindly wandering the streets. Others, we broke their limbs as they scrambled to enter their dwellings. We chased one flying woman for several minutes before she disappeared into the woods. We wasted nearly fourty-five minutes, in total, on several occasions, trying to get the large amount of townspeople occupying the Guards' Barracks to fight us, to no avail. It was hilarious, throwing spells, Insults, and Intimidates through their cracked door, back-and-forth at one another, however. We were finally satisfied when the woman heckling us finally was forced to take several minutes of blindness and stubbornness.
After we returned, I stalked the streets of Travance as a Ghast. It was great, moaning and groaning and shambling down the streets, all around the main circuit of camp. I enjoyed the enthusiasm of the group. Once one of us started in character, not one of us stopped until the end of the mod, even when PCs were nowhere to be found. Thankfully, we weren't intelligent enough to knock on doors.
Next, we returned to Logistics, and Ben sent us out as Ghost Buccaneers who had started to slightly regain sentience and understand basic parts of our lives. We tried entering the Inn and ordering drinks with the one gold piece we held among us, but Magnus and several other PCs had none of it. (Party-poopers!)
After failing to revel at the Inn, we took to the streets, calling out "Grog!" "Rum!" and singing sea-shanties. Every PC we happened across, we asked "You drink?" and offered them to partake in our revelry. Most shrugged us off, however. Finally, we happened across a tent with friendly-enough occupants. We drank and partied with four Barbarians for a time, nearly bringing them along with us, to our ship. We enthusiastically asked them to "Set sail!" with us, and accompany us to our ship. I made sure to compliment them on their "Good ship!" (tent.) Finally, they agreed to come with us, though three of them peeled off while we weren't watching. Kyras, leader of the Adventurer's Guild, decided he was going to lead us off into the woods, where we would no longer pose a threat to Travance. He distracted us by trying to teach us how to better sing sea shanties (Up to this point, we had been singing VERY far out of tune, in poor harmony, and replacing various lyrics with "grog," "ale," "mead," "ship," "yar," and "sail," among other maritime terms.) But, our captain soon Waylay'd him and turned his plans in our favor. We quick-bound him and made him the second-time victim of a kidnapping mod. We even took him back to our ship, and named him our Captain. PCs soon came to his rescue however. We almost recruited them as well. The only PC unwilling to come aboard and set sail with us was Guo Chenjing! Several PCs were very open to the idea, at first, but our actual Ghost Captain, who has a little more memory of his life as a villain, than we do as his crew, fired the first shot, and turned most of the PCs against us. This turned into a rather tragic fight, for me at least, as the betrayed Ghost both defended pitying PCs while getting cut down mercilessly by others. IC, the poor Polter-pirate was at a loss! He had never felt so betrayed. But he stood firm next to Nalick, whose face read just pure horror and empathy. OOG I felt terrible. But it was worth it.
Finally, Guo Chenjing confronted me with my expired mortality, and I still failed to understand the concept of my long-past expiration. I responded with fierce "Not dead!"s. Around this time, PCs finally broke the illusion of our ship by breaching the Captain's Quarters in search of Kyras. A priceless moment was one I heard secondhand, where Magnus breached the door and Ben described to him what he saw: Kyras being attended to by several wenches, and eating grapes and drinking wine. Magnus, OOG, replied "Now what do I ACTUALLY see?" And Ben returned the same description. Magnus' reaction was perfect--a slight drop in the shoulders, and an incredulous smirk, both OOG. My death was a slow fade into nothingness, as I continued to deny my ghostly existence to Guo Chenjing. If only they had proven it to him! Though perhaps this was the happy ending.
After all of this combat, we knew everyone was washed. So we sent a mild combat mod: We sent CR 5 Goblins to the Inn for the sake of getting as many corpses as possible. We lasted far longer than intended, however, as most PCs were lest interested in us that they were in their game of Moatbeast Moatbeast Moatbeast. Thankfully, some PCs were around who were not involved in the game, though we actually managed to down one of them through shear luck and numbers. And then we sat there. For minutes on end. Finally, the Corpsemen showed up, having gotten lazy after all of the death of Main Mod. Apparently, they'd been going on a soft strike, but their manager was having none of it. Eventually, some PCs took pity on the Corpsemen, and actually assisted the poor wretches in moving the bodies out of the Inn. I wish I could have stuck around to see the events unfold, but unfortunately, I knew we had to head back right away if we wanted to get one more mod out before closing.
The last mod of Second Graveyard shift was another roleplay mod, in which we took two Ogres and a dozen Kobolds and entered the Inn. The two Ogres sat down and played a game of Chaos chess while we, amazed, enthusiastically applauded their every move, as they blatantly broke every rule of Chess, and introduced their own. There was an abundance of sacrificing Pawns to gain the upper hand, and to resurrect lost pieces. There were sweeping board-wipe attacks by "Most-Powerful Warriahr" (King.) And there was even a Trap Card, which decided the victor!
Thankfully, the players were engaged in a heated game(?) of Moatbeast Moatbeast Moatbeast, and did not, once again, killjoy the mod. They even applauded with us a few times. Once the game was finished, the Ogre went on a victory lap, and challenged one of the PCs to a game of Chaos Chess as well. This constituted the Ogre sitting at the Moatbeast table. Eventually, the PC declined the game however, prom[ting the Ogre to rise, losing Moatbeast. It proceeded to take another victory lap in defiance. Somehow on this lap, Magnus lost his chair, and the entire table united in solidarity to save him from digestion, holding him up while another PC, not involved in the game, retrieved another chair for him. Just as my Kobold became interested enough in the game to join in, however, the PCs called it a night and went home. We all collectively died to the Moatbeast.
After all of this, I was absolutely beaten, and actually was sick from Sunday through the next week. The Barn was very dusty, and I do not think it sat well with me. I will be sure to bring a carpenter's dust mask for myself next event. I'll probably just get a pack and distribute them to everyone else! I'll also make sure to sweep, on behalf of everyone else, before I settle in. I wouldn't wish that on anyone else ever again.
Nothing can beat a good NPC shift. Thank you so much Ben, Chris, Brian, Zach and all of the other Marshals I volunteered for over the weekend for a hell of a first event! I can't wait to come back in January!
I nominated Kyras for best PC, for being the first character to take me in, and for heeding the first rule of improv and saying "Yes!" and drinking and reveling with us Ghost Buccaneers, thereby allowing us to put on a hilarious spontaneous combat mod at 2:30AM after main mod!
For best NPC, I nominated Chris Zeppetto's imbecile "tunnel expert". That was the best roleplay I've ever had as an NPC, and all because of his character. He also lasted for at least 45 minutes against the entirety of the Rogues Guild. He HAS to be given credit for that.
For best player, I nominated the player of Papa Gypsy, for brilliant use of Blood Hex, forcing us NPCs to fight the Rogues' Guild while enthusiastically and vigorously dancing, and for, in one of the NPC mods, which I cannot remember for the life of me, using Freeze Ground to create chutes and slides to remove his victims from the Inn in the most humorous way possible.
The only direct quote, IC, I could remember, was this, and I quote very roughly:
Clytie: (Tending the Inn's bar, overhearing a conversation about pie.) What is this "pie"? I've never had one before.
Bar-goer: This is.... like a pie.
Clytie: (Interested.) What is it?!
Bar-goer: It's a... pastry!
Clytie: Let me have it!
(She takes the pastry and takes a bite.)
Clytie: Oh my God. Pastry is so good! I can't imagine what pie is like!
Feast was fantastic! I wish I'd arrived on time, so I could have had a fair chance at first course before it cooled!
My critique for the event: Have even more spontaneous mods! Ben's mods after Main Mod were all absolutely brilliant, and the improvised mods before Feast were exactly what we needed to flavor the event.
Also, I've heard concerns about the Bear Mod, that it may or may not have been problematic, given the ACTUAL bear presence on camp, had people, IG, started screaming "BEAR, BEAR!" and causing mass panic elsewhere, OOG.
Thank you all for a wonderful first event, and I will see you in January!

Since this is your first event, you're still eligible for a rewrite. Any time before your third event, you can change aspects of your character that you don't like. Come to the Barn in January like you did when you first made your character and we'll help you work out the kinks!
