Hello!
New player here! (Jeanne Vierre's wife) I just have a few questions
-I want to be a (human) commoner class (id like to try non fighting so i can learn more by watching). I want to do something fun, like be a muse, and performing music for everyone. I'm not sure if that's a thing?
- what time period is this set in so i can dress accordingly?

Evening, Caroline!
I'm Jeff and I'm a New Player Marshal here (it's a NPM's job to welcome you to the game and help you get your sea legs your first couple of events).
You can totally be a muse and perform for people--musically and otherwise--by being a Bard!
Knight Realms is set in the 1200s, a medieval time period for the most part dress-wise.
We'll be here if you need us.
-Jeff

No type of character is required to fight. Some of them don't have access to combat abilities, while others are geared more toward the role-play side of things as opposed to the fighting. Warriors and other "fighter" professions are expected to do a lot of fighting, but it is possible that your character is more rusty than her armor, lacks the confidence in her fighting prowess, or grew tired of such a lifestyle and wants to try something new.

As for the instruments, yes, it does need to be from the medieval period.
Typically, the songs do as well. However, if you can make a more recent, more obscure song (and you have several hundreds of years to work with) sound period-appropriate or even write your own, more power to you.
This site, via Web Links under the Resources tab up top, has a bunch of English, Irish, Welsh, and Scottish folk songs for you to choose from:
www.contemplator.com/bycount.html
You could also do a search for music by The High Kings, Great Big Sea, Heather Dale, or Heather Alexander. Most of their music is period-appropriate.

Violins could work, or a ukelele. There have even been more than a few guitars--not electric, obviously!

Not a new player marshal, but also a bard like Nalick. Aimee is a Dryad druid/bard who plays a bodhran and a sweet-potato ocarina, as well as sing. I don't know if I'll bring her to game in January yet. She is 100% non-combat, and knows various spells just to disengage combat. She'll root you to the ground, confuse you, make you itchy, or just plain vanish into the woods to disengage. Or run. Fast.
In January we'll have The Creepy Bard who plays various period instruments and sings various languages, and Trent Mayfair who both sings and plays bodhran, if you see them, reach out to them for fun.
