Because for some people, its an avocation, while for others a way of life.  With Mike Smith, it is his Holy Grail,  having elevated bacon to the Holy of Holies (along with beer, to give him his full due).

It's ok... I'm at a convention, and we went out to the buffalo chop house (a pretty fancy place)... for an appetizer they had 6 strips of apple smoked bacon.  It was delicious!!
