I can find lots of unofficial sites (random forums, wikipedia, etc) that mention it...but no official write up or statement on a credible website that can confirm.
This is is truly a (rolls dice to determine next two words) a sad day

Way to go Stacey, your birthday killed the godfather of modern role-playing.
On a serious note, this is truly a sad day. A man of great imagination who did great things for our hobby has passed.

Let us bow our heads, and spend 1d6 moments remembering a great man who did so much for the fantasy genre (Knowledge: History 10) and being the founding father of tabletop gaming. (Knowledge: History 15)

I think Gavin has understated Mr. Gygax's contribution. I daresay that he invented our hobby.
Tom, your post is an absolutely charming tribute.

His contributions to the genre of Fantasy anything could arguably be considered equal to those of Tolkien, D&D is that pervasive.
The man was an abrasive ass much of the time, but you can't take those accomplishments away from him. He does have to share them with Arneson though, legally.

I remember seeing him at I-Con, my friends harassing him asking him what the stats were for a humble ant (one of the ways an artifact could be destroyed was to be crushed under the heel of a humble ant). I even own a copy of Dangerous Dimensions (before it was turned into Dangerous Journeys, than discontinued). He did indeed invent RPG, echoes and blatant plagiarism are evident in every game ever created, and any differences are almost specifically difference placed in there to specifically contrast with the norm he created.

A really sad day. I've got hooked in '81 and loved every chance I have had to play. None of this is where it is today, possibly at all, without D&D. I only wish they could have come up with a kick a$$ movie of D&D while he was alive to enjoy it.

That sharing things legally with Arneson was a major sticking point. To avoid that, and to screw over his co-designer, Advanced Dungeons & Dragons was spawned. It all came out in the belated wash. Before WoTC could buy out the D&D corpus, they had to settle with Arneson.

then there was Stephen Colbert, who at the end of his "Report" said Gygax would be missed.
