Does anyone here have any experience making shields & any familiarity with overlapping, spiral designs? I am playing around with shield designs & would like some people's input regarding how overlapping spirals work.

I want to attempt to have an expanding shield design. Like a seashell... overlapping, thin plates connected to a central pivot point on a torsion spring. Hit the switch, the spring turns and the overlapping plates expand in a circular motion, creating a shield in the shape of a round, spiral.

For those who remember the Burton version of Batman... that mobile had a shield animation that showed overlapping, clamshell plates that expanded to cover an area. The shield I want is similar, in that it's a large bracer, which unfolds/expands/spirals out into a round shield design.

I think the issue you're going to face is that anything that mobile (that isn't Hollywood) is not going to be sturdy enough to be a shield. Even at KR, where it's light contact with padded weapons, it's going to take a beating... and a bunch of moving parts is going to break, jam, etc.

That's what I thought too. It was just an idea I was playing around with. Still, if it does ever get made & turns out to be feasible & safe... it would look awesome.
Like in this video . The shield expands out in 2 sections.
Edit: editted for a better clip.

You know, this is just the kind of crazy malarky that I might try and fiddle with... I made a freaking spinning shield... Come to think of it, I might bring that next event if anyone is curious to have a look.

I made something like this before. But it would be completely unsafe for Larping. The trick is to use high tension springs, slides, and a pin, affixed to a bracer, that all the plates lay on.
