Spell Packets? was created by Matthias (Matthias)
Anyone have simple directions for making spell packets? I understand it's a pretty simple concept, but to avoid re-inventing the wheel, I mean stuff like what fabric works best, how big a piece of fabric used, etc.

Thanks!

For fabric, nothing beats a 200-thread count Mainstays sheet from Walmart. You can get a full size flat sheet for $5.00, and it will get you in upwards of 200 packets. Whatever you choose, try to get cotton as it biodegrades better.

What is the difference between sewn and tied packets? Are the sewn packets supposed to be sewn all all edges creating more like a tiny beanbag?

My first packets were like that (small beanbag), for purposes of determining how far a perfect aimed spell could go. Mine were accepted, but had to pass a safety test as they were heavier than the normal measure of birdseed.

I use cracked corn, as it costs 40% of what sunflower seeds cost.

What is appropriate for fastening? Are rubber bands OK or not environmentally friendly enough? Should string be used, like kite string?

Regular household cotton twine is probably best. A double square knot usually does the trick. I recommend wearing dexterity gloves if you're going to be making a large quantity such as a service donation, or your fingers will pay the price from having to tie 500+ knots with thin twine.

Both have and are currently used. Many elastic bands degrade. IIRC, more SPs are offered for the ones that are tied, as they take longer to make. The exact quantity of SPs per packet and type will have to be listed by someone from Logistics.

Fabric stores sell a wheel (pizza cutter-like) device that makes it very easy to score/cut material. One can also by a plastic "fabric" mat upon which to lay the cloth prior to cutting. While this will involve some up-front costs, if one is going to eventually make thousands of packets (I have), it really cuts down on the time.
