1. This is a Bacon shortage in Europe, specifically in Great Britain. Not worldwide.
2. The shortage is something along the lines of 1-2%.
3. Newspapers are apparently having very, very slow news days lately.

People react to sensationalist journalism for fun and profit, film at 11. :P

No, really, it happens all the time. The media makes some big deal out of some little thing, and the people who supply that thing (or its competition) make an even bigger deal out of it to make a quick buck. People think bacon's going to run out? Start squeezing some extra money out of it. People think butter is bad for you? Margarine companies raise prices and laud their health benefits (replace butter and margarine every 5-10 years).

Welcome to the cold calculus of commerce. Justified by geriatric journalism.

Dure to the actual and (further) increases expected in animal food corn due to our record drought, farmers throughout the country are reducing the size of their pig herds. This will result in temporary stability or even a slight decline in pork, but come the spring and summer next year, we can all expect to see bacon rise.

That dies not detract in the least from Cameron's overall correctness in his assessment. Much of the increase in oil was/is based upon speculation. I have a very accurate idea as to bacon on the local level - every month for three years plus I have been buying 4#, much as William has (he buys more). I am willing to bed the cost is up this Thursday when Luis and I hit BJs.
