The Excommunicatas
As written by Ex-Cardinal Bastian Del’Amore in the beginning of Summer1213
They came in the dark of night. Beggars and thieves bent on destroying everything we’ve worked for centuries to build, all at the beck and call of an old man suffering from inflictions of the mind. We are the outcast now, the excommunicated, or the Excomunicatas as we now proudly call ourselves.
We are not allowed to preach to the masses. The new establishment forbids it and send their Zealot dogs after us if we do; so we must find more subtle ways of serving the gods of light.
All that we built for centuries dismantled in less than a decade and for what, a small few differences of opinion?
They believe that we should live like rats in hovels of straw and clay, and to what end? Such a sacrifice never impressed a common man into believing in the light. The trappings of old were meant to impress, our ornate robs and staves of pure gold adorned with jewels. Such things inspire awe and make the common man aspire to greatness. They must have confidence in those they seek to be lead by.
They believe that the common man can be heard by the gods of light as clearly and as loudly as gods chosen. How is this possible? The chosen are the chosen for a reason, and we act as the conduit between the common man and the gods to aid them. To tell them they have the power to do so on their own is both wrong and misleading. How many poor people will suffer their position in life forever due to this un-truth? We must seek out the mis-informed and speak to the gods for them on their behalf.
They believe that we should not seek out power and titles, but how else are things in this world moved? The King is proof of this if ever there was any. Power and influence talks and brings about change. You cannot change the world on a mere desire to do so, you must have tangible power to facilitate such change.
They have cast away our holy texts, our cannon laws, our religious scripts; centuries of scrolls now disregarded. Centuries of history, belief and tradition now deemed obsolete and replaced with words enough to barely fill half a parchment scroll, and simply because they call it “The one true word of Valos” it is believed and all other words are cast aside. We will hold our shields up high and become protectors of the past.
The world is a darker place now and we must be more vigilant to keep it from tumbling further into the abyss. We have been stripped of our authority, our backing, our protection and are treated as mere commoners of the Kingdom. We are the Excomunicatas and we will not fade away quietly into history to be forgotten and lost.
