Chronicle Topic for the End of May - Justice was created by Amizar (Amizar)
What is Justice?

Is it “the principle of fairness and the ideal of moral equity” or “being punished for a crime that was committed”? Some people are dedicated to the idea of Justice, while others would just as soon look away. If you become aware of an injustice, does it then become incumbent upon you to right that wrong?

Is it justice if a person kills another because that person previously hurt his or her child, or what about someone else who killed someone accidentally or in self-defense? Is justice taking “an eye for an eye?” How exactly should the punishment fit the crime? The questions around Justice seem to be endless.

In Travance, we have seen people who have “taken justice into their own hands” and instances of Baronial “justice” which have caused controversy. Perhaps you have an opinion on this topic. Despite the fact what seems just to one person (or group) could seem completely unjust to another person (or group), the next issue of the Chronicle will look into this troublesome topic.

Potential contributing authors are cautioned to keep a civil tone, and avoid writing in an accusatory or slanderous way. As always, anonymous submissions will be accepted, but know that anonymity is limited to the readers, and Baronial officials can always determine the identity of the author.

There will be no Chronicle published for the May Baronial Feast, so that we may devote our efforts to producing the Justice edition for the Extended Feast at the end of the month ((OOG: Week in the Life)).

Short Fiction Contest

The Chronicle is excited to announce our next contest: Short Fiction Writing! For this contest, we are seeking a short work of fiction that is usually written in prose, often in narrative format. Short stories have their origins in oral story-telling traditions and the prose anecdote, a swiftly-sketched situation that quickly comes to its point. Details regarding length, judging and prizes will be made available in a future posting, so watch this bulletin board. Please remember that the contest is for a short story.

In addition to the Short Fiction Contest and stories about Justice, we also encourage you to write about recent events you have experienced. If you want to contribute, but are uncertain of a topic, feel free to contact one of the editors for suggestions. Pay is 10 gold per article, poem, or piece of artwork; in addition, the Barony considers it service to the common good ((OOG: 400 SP, and build for consistent contributors)).

Please send your submissions to Amizar Wuzwhir care of the Chronicle.

Deadline for this edition is Saturday, May 23rd, 1215. Articles submitted after this date may not be published.

Can you please clarify what you consider a short story?
After all, short is a matter of perspective...

...just ask a halfling.

The editors are consulting to establish a length limit for this contest. We will post the full details, including judging and prizes, in an upcoming announcement.

Until then, we encourage authors--of all sizes--to write no more than one page. Thank you for your question! We look forward to your story.

As a reminder, submissions are due this weekend.

Let's go with roughly two pages on the story length limit. If anyone is having any issues editing down to that length, let me know and I'll be happy to assist.
