I came across this program today, and thought it may be worthwhile.  I know I normally don't know what to do with my cell phone, once I've gotten a new one so I thought I would mention it.  They give cell phones to soldiers to help them call home more.

Clarification: they actually sell the phones to a recycling company, and then use that money to purchase calling cards for the soldiers.  So no, you wouldn't need to worry about anyone accessing personal information that you may have on your phone.
