The normal rule is that you must play your character at some point in order to learn skills, self-taught or otherwise.

With the event being combat-based (or so it seems from the IG posts), will the period change and reset at 6:00, or will the whole event be one period, as a Festival normally is?

Well, I tend to think that a more appropriate term for it is "Conflict" based, since there will be a lot of other things to do besides fighting

It's going to be one period just like every other festival is.
