And as Dave said - DON'T TALK ABOUT IT.  Not even OOG.  Things get overheard accidentally, people slip, and even an honest mistake can't be undone if heard at the wrong time / place.

This is especially an issue in logistics, where people on their NPC shifts are often present for the behind-the-scenes of shifty IG dealings and then don't have the courtesy not to run their mouths about it.

"I'm willing to take that chance!"

Things I am no longer allowed to do in an RPG :
31. The backup trap handler is not whoever has the most HP at the time.
73. Not allowed to name my cudgel Ceremonial Whoopass Stick.
74. My thief's battle cry is not "Run And Live"

Anytime that you use IG information that you know OOG, but your character does not know IG you are meta-gaming. Any player found to be meta-gaming will receive a Rules Violation and any outcomes of the incident will be reversed.

You can quote meta-gaming rules all you want... but once something is known, it can't be unknown, and I think it takes a VERY skilled person not to let such knowledge creep in even a little bit, not necessarily enough that you would use it in taking actions, but at least as a little thought that's always sitting in the back of your mind.

Anyway, the crux of this is: If you don't want it known IG, you're best off leaving it unknown OOG.

And logistics NPCs, if you do overhear something, STFU!

Meta-gaming ruins characters, complicates plot, bogs down the game and ruins relationships from acquaintance to friend.

I have seen it and been a part of it.

Don't do it!

That is all.

In regards to meta-gaming and "don't talk about it OOG": KR is supposed to be 24/7 IG at an event. That said, many of us occasionally slip into a little bit of OOG chatter, especially concerning the game rules. If you're OOG talking about necromancy spells, even for a few seconds, and someone walks by and hears it, how are they to know it was OOG talk? Innocent mistakes can cause far more damage than purposeful metagaming (which can usually be seen for what it is pretty quickly).

The easiest solution is not to talk about rules while in an IG area. ;)  If that can't be avoided, make sure you indicate as clearly as possible that you are OOG - White headband, weapon over head, etc.  Speak using distinctly OOG terms (such as "Vince, I have a rules question" instead of "Lethias, do you know anything about Necromancy?").

If at all possible, move yourself to somewhere out of the way, such as Logistics, or an open area where you can see people approaching you if you need to have that discussion.  Sometimes it's not possible, but choosing to slip OOG and talk about the rules at 4:00 AM in your cabin while a townsmember is walking by outside is a prime example of why it's a good idea NOT to do that. ;)
