Unless you're thinking of something else, sternos are only really worthwhile if you have the chaffing (sp?) dishes to go with them to hold the food.

They're small round containers with this blue gel that burns and keeps things hot for periods of time. Caterers use them. That's not a sterno?

They need special dishes above them to distribute the heat, or else you get a really hot spot above the flame, and it burns the contents (and is a pain to clean up - personal experience, trust me...)

Sterno is the brand name for the most common gelled wood alcohol, sort of like Kleenex for tissue.

Kristen is correct about the need for a chaffing dish, which is usually a set-up consisting of a steamer tray under the dishes to be warmed.  I spoke with James and assuming the setup is correct, and you have a table cover/cloth, no problem.  You do not want to jury rig  the set-up, but they are available as rentals from most places.
