Martin's Ice and Fire is more or less my inspiration for 'Daedri' not that the character exists in any way in the books as any one character that is. Carrying an air of realism around you while playing your character is what really entertains me.
I just wish he would finish what he started, that guy really knows how to leave a cliffhanger.
All that said if you want to talk about a REAL master of fantasy, lets face it. Robert Jordan takes hot steamy dumps on Tolkien and Martin. Book # 13. And its only just begining.
Actually I tore the last few pages out of book 3 and stopped reading replacing it instead with a small tupperware filled with a microwaved fart.

Don't speak ill of Robert Jordan, he's dead, and apparently has lots of close personal friends in KR.
I speak from experience.

Aside from previous asplosions regarding the late Mr. Jordan, I think a lot of people will agree with me that Martin's books blow Wheel of Time out of the f'ing water. The series started fantastically, but slowly (and I mean slooooooowly) devolved into a fantasy soap opera quagmire that I, for one, only continued to read because of the time commitment I had put in already.
Now that Mr. Jordan has passed away and someone else may finish book 13, I don't think it's worth it. Look what happened when outside authors tried to write stories based on Robert Howard characters.
And let's be honest, Jaime Lannister would pwn Rand al'Thor in the face while he was crying like a little girl over 'going crazy'. Not to mention that Martin shows strong female characters in a realistic medieval setting, unlike Jordan having to give them super-powers or insanely ridiculous combat abilities to make them equal.

Jon Snow is the best character ever. I just hope to God Martin doesn't decide to kill him off.
Night gathers, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death. I shall take no wife, hold no lands, father no children. I shall wear no crowns and win no glory. I shall live and die at my post. I am the sword in the darkness. I am the watcher on the walls. I am the fire that burns against the cold, the light that brings the dawn, the horn that wakes the sleepers, the shield that guards the realms of men. I pledge my life and honor to the Night's Watch, for this night and all the nights to come.
No one should ever wonder where I got my inspiration for Turin 2.0 ever again.
PS: This thread is officially hijacked. Wonder if we should split it and jsut make a discussion about the awesomeness of ASOIAF.

Jon and Daenarys (sp) getting hitched and fighting off the others with the power of DRAGONS.
Jamie Lannister is the best character ever.
Wait no, it's Ned Stark.
Or Sir Arthur Dayne, the Sword of Morning.
Maybe the Hound?
I can't choose.
